Fatio's Folly
Unbuilt Proposal for NE Florida
House designed for an architectural competition for a new development in a retirement-friendly area close to Jacksonville and St Augustine, NE Florida. Historically, in the late 18th century, Francis Philip Fatio moved to this area and established rice fields and orange groves on his plantations. The neighborhood is now surrounded by thick pine woodland, and the St John's River is in walking distance. The design solution is formed by using layers of materials and spaces - maintaining the open feel of nature and view using porches, while shading the house from the sun and close neighbors. Regionally adapted features include wood siding, porches, shutters, and an updated wood slat shading device. This development mandates traditional styles, including vernacular (any locally adapted style based on climate and resources). The competition required a home for 2 working parents and 2 children, between 2,000-2,500 s.f. of living area, front porch, 2-car garage, and use of wood as primary structural component (sponsored by APA Plywood).
