Green Home Addition
Unbuilt Project for Client in Dunedin, Florida
The homeowners bought this 1960s concrete block house because it was near the water, on a corner lot, and had no prior remodeling or additions. The 1,000 sf home had modest sized rooms - the remodel did not touch the bedrooms and garage. A 1,000 sf addition was designed using insulated concrete forms (ICFs) to conserve energy. The front door was moved to the other street side, facing north, for a slim view of the water. The master suite - bedroom, bathroom, and closets - was separated from the old bedrooms, so those could be used by kids & grandkids. The great room replaced the individual living, dining, and kitchen - the kitchen expanded and opened to the dining room, and the ceiling/roof of the new living area was raised to let in light. The long octagonal shape of this addition was a direct request from the homeowners. A small porch wraps the living area and overlooks the backyard. We positioned windows, porches, and roof overhangs to keep out the hot Florida sun, yet still have plenty of light and views from the inside.
